ARALU is a textile-led art and design studio founded by Ruwanthi Gajadeera.
Her work moves across fashion, textile research, installation, scent, sound, and participatory workshops. She has worked across commercial garment development, factory-based R&D, natural dye experimentation, zero-waste methods, and art-science collaboration. Her practice has been recognised through the Taiwan Fashion Design Award, Redress Design Awards, International Flavours & Fragrances x RCA, the European Marine Board’s EMBracing the Ocean programme, and international platforms connected to design, ocean advocacy, and public engagement.
Through ARALU, she is building a studio that treats garments not as disposable products, but as living material records. Each piece, workshop, and collaboration asks how clothing can carry memory, reduce waste, and invite people into a more careful relationship with what they own.
Rooted in South Asian material culture and shaped by contemporary fashion, research, and ecological inquiry, the studio works across garments, repair, scent, sound, installation, and participatory workshops.

ARALU begins with the belief that a garment is never only a product. It is a record of fibre, labour, memory, land, water, and care. The studio is evolving around a more durable relationship with clothing: one in which garments are worn, repaired, remembered, and transformed.

From the spiritual depth of John Coltrane and the innovation of Miles Davis to the cosmic vision of Sun Ra, his roots run deep in jazz’s most transformative voices. He blends these with the raw energy of Run DMC, the post-punk edge of Television, and the limitless possibilities of electronic music.
